Water is lifeblood of region, must never be weaponised, says PM Shehbaz at SCO summit
- On Tuesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Council of Heads of State summit in Bishkek, warning that water treaties are "solemn, binding international commitments" that must be honoured without political weaponization.
- Pakistan has sacrificed more than 90,000 lives fighting terrorism, which Shehbaz stated caused the country economic losses exceeding $150 billion, describing it as "one of the greatest threats" to the region.
- As Pakistan assumed the SCO chairmanship for 2026–27, Shehbaz proposed an action plan prioritizing information technology, energy development, and poverty reduction while calling for implementation of the SCO Development Strategy 2035.
- The premier also emphasized the newly signed Makkah Joint Defence Agreement is "fundamentally defensive in nature," while urging the international community to help Palestinian people secure their fundamental right to self-determination.
- Amid the Indus Waters Treaty dispute, Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, noting that diplomatic efforts led to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding to reduce regional tensions.
