Bearspaw South Feeder Main Operational, Water Restrictions Could Lift Thursday
City officials say the repaired main is back online after carrying 60% of treated water, allowing restrictions to end ahead of schedule.
- On Thursday, the City of Calgary lifted water restrictions after completing repairs to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main ahead of schedule. "As of today, you can resume normal water use," said Michael Thompson, Calgary's general manager of infrastructure services.
- Officials implemented restrictions on March 9 to reinforce nine damaged sections of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main, which carries 60 per cent of Calgary's water. During the shutdown, the city relied on the smaller Glenmore water treatment plant.
- Daily water consumption reached 503 million litres on Wednesday, exceeding the city's target of less than 500 million litres. Thompson praised Calgarians for maintaining usage within safe limits throughout the restrictions.
- Recreation facilities, including hot tubs and kiddie pools, are reopening immediately. Construction crews will remove traffic detours along 16 Avenue Northwest and Sarcee Trail Northwest throughout this weekend.
- Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas warned the pipe remains "terminally ill" and requires replacement expected later this year. "These reinforcements do not mean that we are out of the woods," Farkas said, noting another round of restrictions is likely this fall.
