Saudi-Hosted 2028 Olympics Qualifier in BMX Cycling Canceled After Riyadh Airport Bombing
The governing body cited recent security concerns and said 2028 Olympic qualification for BMX Freestyle will be affected.
On Friday, the International Cycling Union canceled the 2026 Urban Cycling World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, after deadly missile attacks by the Houthi militia movement targeted the city's airport.
King Khalid International Airport faced multiple missile strikes over the past 10 days, killing 18 people and injuring hundreds, creating an unpredictable security situation that forced the governing body to act.
AusCycling withdrew its team earlier Friday citing government travel advice, while several other national federations had already taken steps to pull out of the November 3–7 event.
The Championships served as a direct qualifying pathway for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where BMX freestyle park riders were set to compete at the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area.
Uncertainty remains regarding rescheduling as the UCI stated it "will communicate shortly on the sporting consequences of this announcement," leaving unclear whether the competition will be rearranged or scrapped.
The International Cycling Union's World Championships in Riyadh, where representatives of the trials, freestyle BMX park and flatland categories would have competed between November 3 and 7, will not be held.
