Walmart Says Your Income and Shopping History Won't Affect Prices
CEO John Furner said Walmart will not use income, shopping history or willingness to pay to set different prices.
On Friday, Walmart Chief Executive Officer John Furner vowed that the retailer will not use customer data like income or shopping history to set personalized prices, extending the pledge to its AI assistant Sparky.
Digital shelf labels, already installed in 2,300 U.S. locations, are replacing paper tags to allow instant price updates from central computers; Walmart expects the technology to be chain-wide within the next year.
Last month, the Federal Trade Commission issued a bulletin warning companies that undisclosed use of personal data for pricing could violate consumer protection laws, though the agency lacks authority to ban personalized pricing outright.
Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Greg Casar introduced H.R. 4966, the Stop Price Gouging in Grocery Stores Act, which would ban electronic shelf labels in stores exceeding 10,000 square feet.
The Washington Legal Foundation claimed in a report that grocery retailers operate on razor-thin margins averaging 1.7 percent and compete too vigorously to raise prices above market levels, defending current pricing practices.
