North Wales School Closures on Thursday as Temperatures Set to Reach 35C
Forecasters say temperatures could approach 40C as the alert expands and health officials warn of pressure on the NHS and wider disruption.
The Met Office extended its rare red extreme heat warning for parts of Wales until 11pm on Thursday as more than 500 schools closed or partially closed due to the "severe weather event."
Forecasters warned that maximum temperatures in the shade could exceed 37 Celsius, potentially rising to 40 Celsius in some places during the heatwave affecting England and Wales.
Nerys Evans, the Welsh government's deputy minister for public and preventative health, called the situation a "heat emergency," warning of extra demand on the NHS and urging residents to protect vulnerable individuals.
Chief Medical Officer Isabel Oliver warned mass gatherings can be risky, advising anyone feeling heat exhaustion to move to a cool place and remove unnecessary clothing to prevent health complications.
While the red warning for Wales ends Thursday night, the Met Office issued an amber extreme heat warning covering large areas of England from midnight until 11pm on Friday, where temperatures should remain above 30C.
