President Aleksandar Vučić fears for his power – and goes hard against the student movement.
The movement that has been developing since the collapse of the Novi Sad canopy poses a more serious challenge than ever before to Vučić, who has dominated Serbian politics for a decade and a half, and who is preparing to return from the presidency to the prime minister's seat. In addition to Serbian civilians, activists have also arrived from Hungary to prevent fraud in Sunday's parliamentary elections.
On Sunday Vučić faces his strongest political opponent: a student movement. If the students win the parliamentary election, the regime could use violence. The Serbian leader has a lot to lose.
On Sunday, the lawyer Milan Vujić is the election observer of the opposition student list. The 28-year-old is confident, but at the same time he warns that Vučić could provoke a crisis in order to remain in power.
Serbia will hold parliamentary elections on Sunday, October 25, where the student movement could challenge Vučić's rule. A possible victory could bring about a European turnaround comparable to Orbán's defeat.
