Volunteers provide 'comfort and support' to patients near end of their lives
Peony Volunteers have provided nearly 50 hours of bedside support to over 30 patients, offering emotional and practical care to those nearing end of life.
- Peony End of Life Volunteers at Worcestershire Royal Hospital are supporting more than 30 patients referred by the Palliative Care Team as part of in-hospital end-of-life care.
- Supported by Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity and The Anne Robson Trust, the service aims to deliver high-quality, coordinated, and individualised end-of-life care, Lead Nurse for Palliative Care Avril Adams said.
- In just a few weeks, Peony Volunteers have dedicated almost 50 hours, with Peony Volunteer Louise Carter saying `Through my experience, I’ve come to appreciate how small gestures can make a big difference for patients and their loved ones as they near the end of life`.
- During the official launch last week, Rachel Colthurst, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust's Peony Volunteer Coordinator, praised volunteers' commitment and confirmed they are now in post.
- An information day for prospective volunteers is set for January 13, 2026, at the Waitrose Community Room in Worcester, and the Peony Service is hoped to roll out at Alexandra Hospital, Redditch during 2026.
