Voltage and Charges in an Act of Abascal in A Coruña
Thousands protested a Vox rally, and police said two demonstrators were arrested after fires, barricades and clashes spread across the city.
On Wednesday, approximately 5,000 people gathered in María Pita square in A Coruña to protest Vox leader Santiago Abascal, with clashes erupting as protesters threw eggs and stones while riot police repeatedly charged the crowd.
Ahead of the visit, Artai Gabis, head of Galiza Nova, warned Abascal's speeches would not be well-received in Galicia, while Vox shared footage claiming supporters received a "great welcome" in the plaza.
Clashes injured more than a dozen people, including a journalist struck by a flying stone requiring emergency stitches, while firefighters extinguished fires and removed barricades protesters erected throughout the city.
Mayor Inés Rey of the Socialist Workers Party condemned the "violent acts," while the Galician Nationalist Bloc criticized the police response and called on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to explain what occurred.
The unrest reflects wider European volatility, with anti-government protests erupting across France and Italy, where authorities approved new security measures and deployed 500 army troops in Milan through the end of 2026.
An overflowing police device cannot prevent nearly half a thousand anti-fascist protesters from harassing the political act in Mahón, which the conservative leader used to charge against Pedro Sánchez and government policies
