Researchers at the Austrian University of Vienna have developed a plastic waste material, capable of absorbing moisture from air and releasing water at moderate temperatures, in a technique that may open the way to new water harvesting methods, particularly in areas where water resources are scarce.
A Viennese team transforms plastic waste into porous materials that bind moisture even from dry air. A little heat is enough to release the water again.
How to harvest water from the air with plastic waste has been shown by a Viennese research team in the journal "Chem Circularity". They developed a relatively simple process for converting conventional plastic waste, such as food packaging, CD cases or plug-in blocks into highly porous materials, which can bind moisture directly from the air even under dry conditions and release it again in case of mild warming.
