Vets, MPs call on feds to launch honour review board to award Canadian Victoria Cross
Veterans and MPs are urging a review board and a first Canadian Victoria Cross for Larochelle, backed by a petition signed by more than 16,000 Canadians.
- On Wednesday, retired general Rick Hillier led a delegation on Parliament Hill urging the government to establish a military honours review board to consider Pte. Jess Larochelle for the Canadian Victoria Cross.
- Larochelle single-handedly fought off a Taliban attack in 2006, saving his platoon's position; the Canadian Victoria Cross, established in 1993, has never been awarded to anyone.
- Supported by more than 16,000 Canadians, Liberal MP Pauline Rochefort presented a petition for the review board, while Conservative MP Blake Richards rallied fellow MPs to press the government.
- While 81 members have received other Military Valour Decorations since October 2006, the Canadian Victoria Cross remains unawarded. National Defence confirms it recognizes "most conspicuous bravery" in combat.
- Based on the 1856 British Victoria Cross, the Canadian version features the inscription "pro valore" instead of "for valour." This distinction underscores the honour's historic significance.
