Vancouver Island residents bilked out of nearly $170K via phone, online scams

Over a recent one-week period, residents in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area reported losing nearly $170,000 to fraudsters, according to the Oceanside RCMP.
Scammers targeted victims through a cryptocurrency scheme involving $120,000, while another resident lost $20,000 after investing in an unregistered company.
Additional losses included $16,500 from a fake email payment request, $9,000 in a credit card phone scam , and more than $7,000 after granting remote computer access.
The Oceanside RCMP now offers fraud prevention presentations to groups and maintains public business hours at their detachment located at 421 Pym Street North.
Because scammers continue to target the Parksville Qualicum Beach area, residents should call 911 if they witness a crime in progress.
