Vance Boelter's defense team asks to delay November trial
Defense lawyers say they need more time to review discovery and prepare a constitutionally adequate case before the Nov. 2 trial.
On Tuesday, Sept. 29, the defense for Vance Boelter filed a motion to delay his Nov. 2 state trial in Minnesota, claiming it is "not feasible to" adequately prepare in just 3 months.
The Hennepin County Attorney charged Boelter with first-degree murder of former Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, after he pleaded not guilty on Sept. 2.
Sen. John Hoffman, Yvette, and Hope said they have "waited long enough," writing, "We want the truth heard in a courtroom. And after everything our family and the Hortman family have endured, we believe Minnesota's victims deserve a justice system that remembers they are part of this process too."
In a hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 30, the court did not address the delay request but scheduled a separate Monday hearing, where Hennepin County Attorney Krista White expects the motion will be granted.
Judge Juan Hoyos said he would be inclined to issue a temporary gag order later Wednesday, applying to Boelter, who is serving a life sentence for the June 14, 2025, assassination of the Hortmans.
