Van Driver Killed in M6 Crash as Motorway Shut for More than 24 Hours
Police say the crash sparked a vehicle fire and large fuel spillage, forcing emergency resurfacing and a prolonged motorway closure.
On Sunday, October 18, a fatal collision involving a van and a lorry occurred on the M6 northbound between Junction 23 at Newton-le-Willows and Junction 24 at Ashton-in-Makerfield, shortly before 10 p.m.
The crash caused one of the vehicles to catch fire, resulting in significant damage to the road surface and a large fuel spillage that complicated emergency response efforts.
National Highways stated that lanes one, two, and three require full resurfacing, while lane four must remain closed for safety until repairs are completed.
Police identified the victim as 41-year-old Vadim Suflet; Detective Sergeant Andy Roper of the Merseyside Police Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit appealed for dashcam footage from witnesses.
Drivers heading northbound are advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion via the A580 and A58, as there is currently no estimated time for the northbound carriageway to reopen.
