Liverpool's New-Look Defence Will Take Time to Gel, Says Van Dijk
Van Dijk said the new centre-back pair must build chemistry in matches after Jacquet scored in a 2-0 pre-season win over Como.
On Sunday, Liverpool defeated Como 2-0 at Anfield, marking the debuts of new defensive signings Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo, with Jacquet scoring the second goal in a 45-minute display.
Liverpool overhauled its central defense this summer following Ibrahima Konate's departure and fitness issues with Joe Gomez and Giovani Leoni, securing Jacquet for £60 million and signing Araujo on loan from Barcelona.
Captain Virgil van Dijk praised the new arrivals as "good players" but acknowledged that establishing a solid partnership requires time, emphasizing that match conditions are essential for building genuine understanding.
"Games are totally different than training," Van Dijk said, explaining that match experience helps defenders "smell some moments" on how to defend, with the squad focused on forming necessary connections.
Liverpool prepares to start its Premier League campaign at Newcastle United on August 23, where head coach Andoni Iraola aims to reinstate a high-tempo style with Jacquet expected to start.
