VA Touts Psilocybin Trial for Vets, but Relief Could Take Time
The PIVOT study will enroll veterans with treatment-resistant depression and compare two psilocybin doses for safety and symptom relief.
The Department of Veterans Affairs announced the Psilocybin Intervention for Veterans Overcoming Treatment-Resistent Depression trial this month to evaluate psilocybin's effectiveness in treating veterans with treatment-resistant major depression and PTSD.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order in April directing federal agencies to expand psychedelic research, citing the persistent toll of more than 6,000 veteran suicides annually over two decades.
The Phase 3 study targets 240 veterans across five locations including Birmingham and Seattle, with participants receiving two dosing sessions and psychological support tracked over six months.
Federal registration lists the study's completion date as June 2031, and psilocybin cannot be prescribed outside research unless the Food and Drug Administration approves it and resolves its Schedule I status.
Government records indicate the study was registered in November 2025, five months before the executive order, marking the second time this year the VA has presented psychedelic research as a fresh initiative.
