USPS recommends mailing ballots today in 34 states. Here's how to make sure yours counts
The agency says 99.9% of ballots reached election officials within 7 days in recent federal elections, and it urges voters to track mailed ballots.
With Election Day one week away, today is the recommended mailing date for 34 states where ballots must arrive by Nov. 3, with the Postal Service advising voters to send completed ballots at least seven days early.
To ensure timely delivery, the agency has deployed extraordinary measures including special pickups and expedited local processing, noting it successfully delivered 99.9% of ballots within seven days during the 2022 and 2024 election cycles.
A Common Cause analysis found approximately 3,700 mail ballots in North Carolina flagged for errors as of Oct. 24, while Forsyth County elections director Tim Tsujii reported 173 absentee ballots were spoiled and 24 awaited corrections as of Oct. 26.
If errors occur, voters should track their ballots online, as most states provide status updates, while Carol Evans of Common Cause suggests calling the nonpartisan Election Protection Hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE to resolve issues.
Amy Cohen, executive director of the National Association of State Election Directors, stated voters should not assume mailing is their only option, as they may alternatively return ballots to election offices, use authorized drop boxes, or vote in person.
