USGA CEO would be 'surprised' if Tiger Woods plays U.S. Open
Whan said Woods is unlikely to tee it up as the golfer recovers from a March crash and inpatient treatment, with the U.S. Open a month away.
USGA CEO Mike Whan said he would be "super surprised" if Tiger Woods plays in the Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, adding he does not expect Woods to compete in any 2026 USGA championship.
Woods entered an inpatient treatment facility following a two-vehicle car accident; Authorities charged Woods with a DUI, though he pleaded not guilty, citing impairment by medication rather than alcohol.
Although the USGA confirmed Woods registered for the 2026 Senior Open at Scioto Country Club, officials noted registration simply ensures eligibility; Woods has not played competitively since the British Open.
"Obviously what he's going through is much bigger than golf," Whan said, emphasizing that while competing would be wonderful, the priority remains Woods' personal recovery and well-being.
Woods' long-term competitive future remains uncertain following prior injuries, though he appeared in one TGL match, creating speculation about his eventual return to professional golf.
