DOJ: 5 Mexican Cartel Bosses Charged in Drug, Gun Schemes
The cartel is accused of trafficking methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and fentanyl while using fraud schemes that cost Americans more than $400 million.
- Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced on August 5 the unsealing of indictments against five high-ranking Jalisco New Generation Cartel members, establishing a $100 million reward fund for information leading to their capture.
- Beyond drug trafficking, the CJNG operates complex, multilayered fraud schemes targeting the elderly. Between 2019 and 2023, these operations cost more than $400 million, according to Assistant Attorney General of the Criminal Division Tysen Duva.
- Juan Carlos Valencia Gonzalez, known as Palon, has assumed cartel leadership with a $25 million bounty on his capture. Julio César Montero Carlos Pinzón and Carlos Andrés Rivera Varela allegedly use assassins to control communities through violence.
- The State Department is targeting 65 associates linked to the CJNG by preventing U.S. entry, Ambassador Michael Gonzalez said. Twenty-six individuals have already had their visas revoked.
- Drug Enforcement Administration head Terry Cole told reporters the cartel remains "relentless," underscoring its continued threat while the agency pursues disruption of its operations and prosecution of members.
