Joshua Michals stabbed and strangled Goldsmiths student Zhe Wang after a dispute over a suspected sexually transmitted infection, with the jury deliberating over 16 hours before the guilty verdict.

  • On 20 March last year, Joshua Michals, 26, was found guilty at the Old Bailey, London of murdering Goldsmiths University creative writing student Zhe Wang, 31, after 16 and a half hours of jury deliberation.

  • Prosecutors said Michals stabbed Ms Wang twice in the face and strangled her inside her flat, then disposed of her phone at a refuse site in Newham, east London, before calling his father and 999.
  • Judge Richard Marks KC will impose a life sentence on Michals and set the minimum term at a later hearing; Michals remains remanded in custody to await sentencing when Ms Wang's parents can be present.
  • Goldsmiths University paid tribute, calling Zhe Wang a `remarkable writer` and said her works will be published posthumously in an upcoming anthology, while classmates and peers mourn her joyful, generous spirit.
