US pauses some foreign assistance programs for Gabon after coup
The Biden administration has suspended most non-humanitarian aid to Gabon after a military takeover last month, pending a review of the circumstances surrounding the ouster of President Ali Bongo Ondimba.
Gabon is the second country to experience a military takeover this year, following the government overthrow in Niger. The US has also suspended aid to Niger but has not determined if it was a coup.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the pause in aid, indicating a concern for democratic processes and the need to assess the situation before continuing assistance to Gabon.
