US group sues Apple over Congo conflict minerals

IRAdvocates alleges Apple’s cobalt sourcing involves child and forced labor in Congo and Rwanda despite Apple's claim that 76% of cobalt was recycled in 2024.

  • On Tuesday, IRAdvocates sued Apple in Washington, alleging its supply chain includes conflict minerals linked to abuses in Congo and Rwanda, seeking legal and injunctive relief.
  • For the second time in recent years, IRAdvocates is suing Apple over alleged conflict minerals in Congo and Rwanda, citing a University of Nottingham study published earlier this year and an early 2024 lawsuit dismissed in U.S. courts.
  • The complaint names Chinese smelters Ningxia Orient, JiuJiang JinXin and Jiujiang Tanbre, alleging coltan was smuggled through Rwanda after mines were seized, per investigators and filings.
  • Apple has not yet replied to the latest complaint, though it publishes public supply-chain and human-rights reports, while Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
  • Apple Inc. told Reuters in December it instructed suppliers and partners to halt sourcing from the DRC and Rwanda earlier this year as industry and authorities tightened mineral controls, squeezing global supplies.
