US FCC proposes to open more wireless spectrum for space-based wireless service
The proposal would boost home, in-flight and on-ship service and modernize rules for unlicensed ultra-wideband devices.
- On Tuesday, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced the Commission will vote later this month to unlock more than 1,000 MHz of spectrum in the 12 GHz and 42 GHz bands for satellite broadband.
- The Commission also proposed modernizing UWB technology rules, marking the first comprehensive update since the landmark 2002 decision that authorized initial unlicensed operations for consumer and IoT devices.
- Carr added that consumers will benefit from competitive, high-speed Internet, stating, "By unlocking these bands, the FCC will give a big boost to American innovation and promote economic growth."
- Unlicensed device manufacturers find high data rates and precise location capabilities essential, as the Commission works to refine rules supporting cutting-edge IoT and consumer technologies.
- This proposal pushes more commercial spectrum into the marketplace than ever before, continuing initiatives to open publicly held radio spectrum since the FCC's auction authority was restored.
