US dual citizen extradited to El Salvador, accused of killing son’s mother and abandoning toddler: DOJ
Authorities say he killed his former partner and abandoned their son, and that phone records, witnesses and an autopsy support the case.
- On Wednesday, Michael Alejandro Castillo Murga, a 27-year-old Beaumont man, was surrendered to Salvadoran authorities, marking the first time the United States has extradited a U.S. citizen to face criminal charges in El Salvador.
- Authorities allege Castillo Murga killed his former partner on January 31, 2019, after picking her and their toddler up; he subsequently abandoned the child in rugged terrain where farmworkers later discovered him suffering from dehydration and starvation.
- Investigators found the victim's body near a highway on February 1, 2019, later discovering that relatives and an attorney directed workers to clean Castillo Murga's bloodstained car with water, shampoo, and vinegar to conceal the death.
- United States Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym certified the extradition, and District Judge John W. Holcomb denied his final appeals; marshals transferred Castillo Murga to custody following a State Department warrant this week.
- Castillo Murga fled to Guatemala on foot on February 2, 2019, allegedly with help from relatives and a lawyer, and now faces charges of "aggravated feminicide" and "imperfect homicide" handled by the Justice Department's Office of International Affairs.
