Judge presses the Trump administration for details on its campaign to stop noncitizens from voting
Boasberg also ordered the administration to disclose which states received Justice Department warnings as Democrats seek to block voter-roll actions.
On Thursday, Chief Judge James Boasberg ordered the Trump administration to identify all states where it pressured officials to prevent non-U.S. citizens from voting, with disclosure due by Friday.
Democratic Party leaders sued on Oct. 20 to prevent election interference, with lawyer Uzoma Nkwonta calling the efforts an "unprecedented campaign" to interfere with state election duties.
A federal judge on Wednesday sided with California, blocking the Justice Department from excluding voters identified as "likely" noncitizens; the administration immediately appealed the ruling.
Boasberg intends to rule by Monday, the eve of Election Day, though he noted the administration could "moot this process at any time" by ending the challenged conduct.
Evidence from the states and Justice Department investigations shows non-citizen voting is extremely rare, while the administration maintains that plaintiffs' claims are overly broad and vague.
