U.S. DISTRICT COURT GRANTS END TO 37-YEAR FEDERAL MONITORSHIP OF TEAMSTERS UNION
The U.S. government has ended the 37-year federal monitorship of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters approved by Judge Loretta Preska in New York.
In 1989, the Southern District and the Teamsters agreed to remove organized crime influence and ensure fair, democratic elections within the union.
The Teamsters have held nine elections during the monitorship and successfully removed corrupt elements from the union.
Since 2021, under President Sean M. O'Brien, the union has built a system of checks and balances where member complaints are investigated and referred to legal authorities when necessary.
