US Diplomats and Family Members Slowly Begin to Return to the Mideast Embassies
The move lets some diplomats and family members return as six-month departure limits expire and embassies remain short of full staffing.
On Friday, the State Department began lifting staffing restrictions at Middle East embassies as the Iran war reached its six-month mark, allowing diplomat family members to return.
Embassies were placed on 'Ordered' or 'Authorized' departure status in March as Iran targeted American interests, including embassies and military facilities across the region.
Regulations limit these statuses to six months, causing benefit expirations for affected families. The State Department created a new 'Restricted operations' status to help embassies resume normal functions.
Embassies in Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain announced on Friday that diplomat family members may return, though in Kuwait and Bahrain the policy applies only to those older than 18.
Individual embassies will determine appropriate staffing levels, the presence of families, and pay and benefits as the State Department remains committed to supporting the workforce throughout this transition.
