US company announces progress toward resurrecting the extinct dodo

The company said its AI platform narrowed roughly 2,300 DNA targets and helped speed lab testing for traits linked to the dodo’s beak and face.

  • On Wednesday, Colossal Biosciences announced new scientific milestones using its AI platform GenoMorph to accelerate dodo de-extinction efforts by identifying genetic targets for the bird's distinctive anatomy.
  • Because dodo DNA is fragmented with few surviving genomes, standard population-level comparisons are impossible; GenoMorph learns how regulatory DNA shapes living birds to identify genetic switches without complete ancient records.
  • GenoMorph analyzed skulls and genomes from more than 70 bird species, mapped at 541 anatomical landmarks, to identify approximately 2,300 candidate regulatory elements linked to beak size and shape.
  • Colossal has expanded its Nicobar pigeon colony in Texas to 36 birds to study genetics and develop heritable edits, while scientists use a new lipid-nanoparticle system to ferry gene-editing tools into avian embryos.
  • Major challenges remain in proving which genetic changes matter and passing edits to subsequent generations, said Ben Lamm, Colossal CEO, noting that releasing dodos to Mauritius depends on ecological work and community consultation.
