US, Canada working on deal to ease steel, auto tariffs: Report
Negotiators are discussing relief from up to 50% steel tariffs and 25% auto tariffs as both governments seek to revive stalled trade talks.
Trade talks between the U.S. and Canada are moving quickly at a political level, with Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc leading the Canadian side toward a mutually beneficial deal.
Canada walked away from negotiations in late summer after the American government proposed a "bad deal" that "asked too much and offered too little," according to Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Last week, President Donald Trump exempted specific Canadian goods from 50 per cent tariffs to help Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins's re-election, while imposing new levies on other imports.
"Pens are down, and the doors are open," said Canada's lead negotiator Janice Charette on Thursday, though detailed negotiations have not yet resumed at the formal table.
Despite Trump's claims that a deal will be settled "pretty soon," sources warn that "key elements remain unresolved" and Canada will judge any offer as a whole before committing.
