Nearly 200 charged in anti-violence initiative in Chicago, Rockford: US attorney
The 60-day federal sweep led to 140 new cases, 305 fugitives arrested and 24 children returned, officials said.
On Thursday, federal officials announced the results of 'Operation New Dawn,' a 60-day initiative that charged 179 people across Chicago and Rockford in 140 new federal cases involving violent crimes.
Led by U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros and ATF Director Robert Cekada, the experiment united 11 federal agencies under a 'badgeless' model to mark the nation's 250th birthday.
The collaboration netted 305 fugitives and rescued 24 children, some kidnap victims. Boutros said, "We did all of this in 60 days, which is truly incredible."
Despite the operation's success, Boutros faces a credibility crisis over his office's handling of the 'Broadview Six' prosecution and his criticism of Cook County judges.
With Independence Day celebrations and the FIFA World Cup ahead, ATF Director Cekada said federal agencies expect to remain busy: "We also know we can't let up on the gas.
