US airline CEOs urge Congress to end standoff, pay airport security officers
CEOs warn 50,000 TSA and federal aviation workers have worked without pay for nearly a month, causing flight delays and longer security lines during peak spring travel.
- On Sunday, CEOs of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Alaska Air Group, United Airlines Holdings, UPS and FedEx sent an open letter urging U.S. Congress to restore DHS funding and guarantee pay for federal aviation workers during shutdowns.
- After funding lapsed on Feb. 13, Democratic lawmakers withheld Department of Homeland Security funding, triggering a partial shutdown that began Feb. 14 over immigration enforcement reforms.
- Agency figures show about 60,000 TSA employees received $0 paychecks on Friday, unscheduled absences rose to 6%, and more than 300 officers have quit since February.
- Operational stress has shown up as long security lines and flight disruptions at Houston Hobby and New Orleans, while travelers are advised to arrive two to three hours early and airports set up food pantries and donation boxes.
- Given last fall's 43-day shutdown, airlines warn 171 million passengers this spring could face disruptions as the FAA imposed a 10% flight cut and the economy lost up to $14 billion.
