Syria to start currency swap on January 1, central bank governor says
The Central Bank will remove two zeros from the currency and set swap deadlines to restore confidence and combat inflation, officials said.
- On January 1, 2026, Syria will start swapping old banknotes for new ones to replace Assad-era notes and try to strengthen the Syrian pound, Central Bank Governor Abdelkader Husrieh said.
- Sources said in August that Syria will issue new banknotes removing two zeros, aiming to restore confidence after Bashar al-Assad fled in December 2024, earlier this month marking the anniversary.
- The central bank has been given authority to decide the deadline for the swap and its locations, Husrieh said, and a press conference will be held on December 27 to explain all details.
- Some bankers have voiced fears the new currency could drive up inflation and erode purchasing power, but Abdelkader Husrieh said the operation will be a smooth and orderly swap.
- The swap replaces Assad-era banknotes shortly after this month’s anniversary, as the new government seeks to rebuild institutions after more than a decade of war.
