University of Iowa’s Center for Intellectual Freedom pauses courses until 2028
The committee will review the center’s budget and initiatives after reports of disagreements and low enrollment, Regents officials said.

- Following reports of disagreements between the University and Interim Director Luciano de Castro, alongside low enrollment in the Center's initial spring courses where only 21 of 64 seats filled, the Committee was established.
- Regent Christine Hensley chairs the Committee, with Board President Robert Cramer as vice chair and Regent Steve Lacy as member, tasked with reviewing budgets, performance evaluations, and the Center's required annual report.
- Classes at the Center will remain on hold as the Committee prioritizes hiring a permanent director and developing curriculum for a state-mandated civics requirement taking effect in 2028.
- Under House File 2800, the Center must prepare to administer six credit hours of Civic Education courses for all public University students starting in July 2028, shifting long-term focus toward curriculum development.
