Universities offering exam deferrals, holds on tuition as war rages on in Middle East
Schools are adding bursaries, counselling and registration relief as students from Iran, Lebanon and other countries face disrupted studies and financial hardship.
- Universities across Canada are offering international students exam deferrals, tuition extensions, emergency bursaries and expanded counselling as the Middle East war continues.
- Data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada shows more than 23,000 study permit holders from Iran and about 1,800 from Lebanon were in Canada as of Dec. 31, 2024.
- Amir Moghadam, president of the University of Toronto Graduate Students' Union, said the union is requesting leaves of absence and offering emergency grants up to $1,000 to affected students.
- Calling current measures "positive steps," Moghadam argued universities need a "broader, systemic framework" for supporting international students during crises, including dedicated emergency funding and mental health services.
