Universal, Warner and Sony Strike Licensing Deals With AI Music Startup Klay
Klay’s AI music model trains solely on licensed tracks, with artist opt-in for use of name and voice, setting new standards for ethical AI in music, labels say.
- On Thursday, Warner Music Group said Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and WMG, with their publishing arms, each signed separate licensing deals with Klay Vision Inc. supporting a subscription product trained solely on licensed music to uplift artists and respect rights.
- Driven by lawsuits and criticism of unlicensed training, labels began negotiating licensing frameworks, with Universal Music Group settling with Udio on Oct. 30 and Warner Music Group also reaching agreement.
- Klay's leadership team includes Ary Attie, CEO; Thomas Hesse, co-founder; Björn Winckler; and Brian Whitman, while its site shows the 'Music Set Free' tagline and waitlist.
- On Nov. 20, WMG CEO Robert Kyncl outlined `three non‑negotiable principles` for AI deals, and labels said participating artists and songwriters who opt in will be credited and paid, though no financial details were provided.
- Related deals show the sector experimenting with licensed AI services as Klay plans to include independent labels, artists, songwriters and publishers next, while Udio and Warner Music Group prepare licensed launches next year and in 2026.
