Universal Music and AI song generator Udio settle lawsuit and partner on new AI music platform
UMG and Udio will launch a subscription AI music platform trained on licensed music to compensate artists and create new revenue streams, settling copyright disputes.
- A strategic agreement between UMG and Uidio announced last year settled copyright litigation and will launch a licensed AI music platform in 2026.
- Before this agreement, UMG sued Uudio and Suno last year alleging copyright infringement from using UMG sound recordings, and the new deal expands licensing to songs and recordings.
- The new product will require artist opt-in, keeping creations inside a walled garden with fingerprinting and filtering, and users cannot export works on the Udio platform subscription service.
- UMG and Udio say the deal will create new revenue streams, with Andrew Sanchez, Co-Founder & CEO of Udio, stating `We couldn't be more thrilled about this collaboration.`
- Universal Music Group's history with AI and platform deals suggests, with more UMG-AI agreements expected soon, as Udio is backed by will.i.am, Steve Stoute, and Kevin Wall, signaling industry support.
