United Airlines to Open Two New Routes to Japan From Chicago and San Francisco

United will be the first U.S. carrier to fly nonstop to Sapporo and add daily Chicago-Narita service, expanding its Japan network.

  • On Thursday, United Airlines announced two new routes linking Chicago and San Francisco with Japan, including the first nonstop service from the U.S. mainland to Sapporo.
  • Starting Dec. 11, United will operate three weekly flights from San Francisco International Airport to New Chitose Airport using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for winter service.
  • Additionally, the carrier will launch daily service between O'Hare International Airport and Narita International Airport beginning Oct. 24, operated with a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
  • Patrick Quayle, the carrier's top network planner, said "United gives travelers more ways to get there than any U.S. airline," as expansion follows recent launches to Mongolia and Italy.
  • United transported 1.8 million passengers between the U.S. and Japan last year, though Star Alliance partner Air Canada also plans to launch Sapporo routes this year.
