US enlists 'Amerikaners' group in refugee scheme for white South Africans
The Amerikaners group will screen applicants for the US Refugee Admissions Program amid political opposition from the South African government, with fewer than 100 arrivals as of August.
The US Department of State designated the Amerikaners group as a referral partner for a refugee resettlement programme targeting white South Africans on September 8, 2025.
The programme, established in February 2025 by the Trump administration, aims to resettle Afrikaners who are considered victims of unjust racial discrimination.
Under the leadership of Sam Busa, the Amerikaners organization collects applicant details, evaluates eligibility, and forwards eligible submissions to the US Department of State for consideration under the refugee admissions program.
Fewer than 100 white South Africans had arrived in the US by early August 2025, while the administration reportedly considers resettling up to 30,000 under the programme.
The South African government strongly opposes the programme, calling it misguided and offensive, and disputes that the white minority meets the international definition of refugees.
