UMMC Revenue Fell 20% After Ransomware Attack Shut Clinics for Nine Days
UMMC faced a nine-day system outage from a ransomware attack that delayed 650 surgeries and caused a $34.2 million revenue shortfall, hospital officials said.
In February, the University of Mississippi Medical Center reported revenue fell about 20% below budget, missing roughly $34.2 million of an expected $194.1 million.
Security reporting shows the suspected Russia-linked Medusa ransomware-as-a-service claimed responsibility and threatened to expose UMMC data unless an $800,000 ransom was paid, while UMMC said the incident remains under investigation.
Clinic operations were disrupted when statewide clinics affiliated with UMMC closed and staff used paper charts for nine days, delaying approximately 650 surgeries until March 2.
To address the backlog, UMMC has extended clinic and operating room hours, and Sinclair says net income is about $65 million behind budget for the year, with all charges expected to be processed by the end of March.
During the Feb. 18 transplant, clinicians completed Wade Watts' surgery amid the outage, with his family praising their care despite electronic system failures.
