UK's top 10 most stolen EVs in 2026 revealed with more than 1,000 vehicles taken
Tempcover said thefts of electric and hybrid vehicles rose 12% to 6,743, with Toyota, Hyundai, BMW and Kia models among the most targeted.
Tempcover analyzed Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency data showing 6,743 electric and hybrid vehicles were reported stolen in the first half of 2026, a 12% increase from 6,015 in the same period last year.
The Toyota C-HR Dynamic HEV CVT topped the theft list with 163 reported cases, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate EV surged 241% to 116 thefts compared with the same period last year.
Tempcover expert Jake Lambert, temporary car insurance expert at Tempcover, noted that "Thieves go where the opportunity is, and with more zero-emission models on the road, criminal tactics are shifting to follow that volume."
Lambert recommends securing companion apps with digital keys, advising: "If the app holds a digital key, set a PIN or biometric lock – a basic password isn't enough."
Owners should also use steering and brake locks as deterrents and park in well-lit areas covered by CCTV or security patrols to reduce theft risk.
