Pope Introduces New Communications Chief Who Shows a More Informal Approach
María Montserrat Alvarado takes over as prefect as Pope Leo XIV seeks a more missionary, digital approach to Vatican communications.
Pope Leo XIV appointed Montserrat Alvarado as prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Communications on Nov. 1, making her the first woman to lead the office and succeeding Paolo Ruffini.
The Vatican has long faced criticism over its budget and secretive ethos, prompting Pope Leo to seek institutional reform that brings what he called "liveliness" to church communications.
Born in Mexico City, Alvarado led the Washington-based EWTN Catholic broadcasting empire before joining the Vatican, having previously held leadership roles at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty in the United States.
Alvarado displayed an informal style during a briefing alongside Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni regarding the Latin America trip, demonstrating direct access to the Holy Father and his prepared messages.
Leo envisions an "explicitly missionary perspective" for communications, which Alvarado said she will execute in concert with the Holy Father, focusing on communicating the Catholic faith rather than imposing her own agenda.
Pope Leon XIV introduced María Montserrat Alvarado, the new head of the Vatican's Department of Communication, highlighting her experience and creativity, in a signal of a possible change of tone in the communication of the Holy See.
