Ukraine’s 35th Independence Year Brings War Up Close VR to Kelowna
The free exhibit uses 360-degree images and children’s artwork to show the war’s impact and help traumatized young artists heal.
- On Aug. 22, the 'War Up Close' initiative opens a virtual reality museum and Children's Art Showcase at The Rotary Centre for the Arts in Kelowna from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Co-Founder and panoramic photographer Mykola Omelchenko created the exhibit to provide 'factual visual evidence' documenting war crimes; the materials 'preserve proof of the crimes committed against civilians.'
- The Children's Art Showcase features the Sunflower Dreams Project, displaying artwork from children in Eastern and Southern Ukraine that co-founder David Elley describes as 'filled with resilience, hope, and love.'
- Coordinator Olena Heichenko reports visitors often stay for hours, saying the immersive experience feels as if they are 'actually in Ukraine,' following successful tours across North America and Europe.
- Inspired by Lviv art lecturer Nataliia Pavliuk at Polytechnic University and her daughter Yustyna, the program helps traumatized children heal through art; admission is free with donations encouraged.
