Ukraine, Russia Conduct 200-For-200 POW Exchange
The swap is the first phase of a 500-for-500 prisoner exchange agreed in Geneva, mediated by the US and UAE, with released POWs receiving medical and psychological care.
On March 5, Ukraine secured the release of 200 servicemen from Russian captivity in the first stage of a prisoner exchange, with returnees seen wrapped in national flags shortly after arriving.
Following trilateral talks in Geneva last month, the U.S. and UAE mediated the first-stage swap of 200 prisoners, Russia said.
Among those freed were members of Ukraine's multiple defence and security branches, including defenders of Mariupol captured in 2022; returnees will undergo medical, physical and psychological rehabilitation and receive state benefits, while Russian servicemen face initial medical checks in Belarus.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote that 200 families received news of returns, saying 'We do not forget anyone.', while officials thanked the United States of America, President Donald Trump, and coordinating institutions.
More prisoners will be released on Friday, as Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky said the sides aim to exchange 500 each this week, continuing rare cooperation after the Feb. 5 swap.
At the mediation of the United States and the United Arab Emirates, hundreds of Ukrainian and Russian soldiers return to their homeland. Some of them have been in captivity since 2022.
