UK weather: Snow warnings upgraded to amber for some areas as country sees wintry start to the year
Amber warnings cover northern Scotland with up to 30cm snow and blizzard risks, causing travel disruptions and health alerts, officials said.
- From midday on Friday, the Met Office issued amber warnings for heavy snow showers across northern and north‑east Scotland, covering Angus, Perth and Kinross, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray and the Highlands until midday on Saturday.
- Strong northerly winds are pushing frequent heavy snow showers well inland, producing drifting and temporary blizzard conditions with lightning near showers on Saturday.
- Around 10-15cm is expected at low levels, rising to 15-30cm in areas above 200m, with further accumulations of 2 to 5cm, locally 10-15cm in low-lying areas through the weekend.
- Travel disruption is expected, with ferry cancellations by CalMac from Stornoway and Ullapool on Friday and likely rail and air delays from 12pm January 2 till 12pm January 3.
- With warnings extending into January, officials urge caution as the UK Health Security Agency said the weather will likely cause significant health impacts, including a rise in deaths until January 5.
