UK to be hotter than Hawaii and Athens on Friday as temperatures may hit 27C, forecasters say

Forecasters said the warm spell could make Friday the hottest day of the year so far before showers and cooler air return over the weekend.

  • The Met Office forecasts temperatures reaching around 27°C in London and East Anglia on Friday, making it potentially the warmest day of the year and hotter than Honolulu's expected 26°C.
  • Met Office meteorologist Simon Partridge told the Press Association, "We've got some very warm, humid air coming up from the south," driving the unusual heat across southeastern regions.
  • Fridays highs will be roughly 10°C above seasonal averages of 15–17°C, though they fall short of the 29.4°C April record set in Camden Square, London, in 1949.
  • However, thick cloud across the central spine from Scotland through the Midlands could bring heavy rain and thunder on Friday, meaning "Certainly the odd rumble of thunder is possible there," Partridge said.
  • Rain is forecast across the country on Sunday, and by Monday temperatures will return to seasonal averages, ending the warm spell with changeable weather over the May Day weekend.
