Poundland Teeters on Brink of Administration as 12,000 Jobs and 600 Stores at Risk
Poundland is preparing an insolvency filing as advisers assess rescue bids and a 10-working-day grace period begins, with 12,000 jobs at risk, officials said.
On Thursday, October 29, high street retailer Poundland announced it is on the brink of administration, putting around 12,000 jobs at risk. The company is preparing to file a notice of intention to appoint administrators imminently.
Owner Gordon Brothers rejected a takeover offer from Irish real estate firm Martin Property Group, which management named as their preferred bidder earlier this month. Gordon Brothers bought the retailer for £1 last year, overseeing a turnaround program that closed more than 100 shops.
Describing the situation as "unexpected, unwanted and wholly avoidable," Managing Director Barry Williams addressed staff in a memo. The retailer currently operates around 600 stores across the UK, employing approximately 12,000 people.
Filing a notice of intention will provide 10 working days of protection from creditors to secure a potential rescue deal. Advisers at AlixPartners were appointed to oversee the insolvency process and assess offers for the business.
Several retail operators have submitted formal and indicative offers for parts of the business, including CDS Superstores, Fortress, and Modella. Gordon Brothers is currently evaluating these active bids, aiming to minimize uncertainty for employees and stakeholders.
