CPS asked to consider manslaughter charges against firms and people over Grenfell fire
Investigators examined more than 15,000 people and 700 organisations before asking prosecutors to weigh manslaughter and fraud charges.
- On Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police submitted final investigation files to the Crown Prosecution Service concerning potential charges for 54 individuals and 20 companies over the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire that killed 72 people.
- A 2024 public inquiry concluded the disaster resulted from "decades of failure" by governments and industry, with chairman Sir Martin Moore-Bick condemning the "systematic dishonesty" of firms regarding flammable cladding.
- Investigators gathered 165 million electronic files, 14,700 statements, and more than 27,000 exhibits during the probe, which Deputy Assistant Commissioner Kevin Southworth described as one of the most complex investigations ever undertaken in Britain.
- The CPS committed to reaching charging decisions before the 10th anniversary of the disaster in June 2027, though trials are not expected to begin before 2029, 12 years after the blaze.
- Kensington and Bayswater MP Joe Powell welcomed the submission, stressing that "bereaved, families and survivors have waited far too long for justice" and demanding criminal accountability.
