Fahmi Condemns Cyberbullying of UM Student, Urges Victims to Lodge Reports
Fahmi said the student did not break any laws and urged cyberbullying victims to report threats as MCMC investigates fake accounts.
- On Sunday, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil condemned threats directed at Universiti Malaya student Ummi Umairah after she questioned public donations for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at an Umno forum.
- Ummi questioned the public's decision to donate funds to help Najib pay a RM50mil court-imposed fine; her remarks subsequently drew significant backlash on social media, including threats to track her down at the university.
- "We should welcome this because she has not broken any laws or committed any criminal offence," Fahmi said, defending her right to speak up against corruption while noting substance mattered more than tone.
- Fahmi urged all cyberbullying victims to immediately lodge reports with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission , emphasizing the commission would act proactively to identify perpetrators.
- Separately, MCMC is investigating over 2,000 pieces of offensive content and 600 fake accounts insulting His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim; the government is studying stringent regulatory mechanisms, including age verification, to combat cyberbullying on WhatsApp.
