Two UK Airports Received Threats as Bomb Alerts Divert Flights Across Europe
Authorities said the threats were assessed as hoaxes, with most flights diverted or landing safely after security checks across several airlines.
At least a dozen flights across Europe faced bomb threats on Thursday, with services from Helsinki, Milan, and Copenhagen among those affected; most aircraft landed safely or diverted to alternate airports as a precaution.
Heathrow and Birmingham airports received threats that authorities assessed as not credible, allowing operations to continue as normal amid a wider wave of security alerts targeting flights throughout the week.
Finnish airline Finnair confirmed two flights faced "unfounded or hoax" threats, while an Aer Lingus A320 carrying 151 passengers diverted to Normandy; a Ryanair flight from London Stansted to Sofia landed safely in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told reporters a "small number of flights" were disrupted, stating the UK possesses "robust aviation security systems" and established procedures for dealing with malicious hoaxes.
The Metropolitan Police's Aviation Policing Command continues to liaise with relevant authorities regarding the threats, as industry experts note that aviation protocols for bomb threats are "well-proved" and prioritize safe aircraft landings.
