Two drivers want one McLaren race seat, but one McLaren driver wants out
Mark Webber, manager to Oscar Piastri, dismissed as "fiction" lingering reports suggesting the Australian driver might swap places with Red Bull's Max Verstappen, insisting Piastri is contracted to McLaren "for the foreseeable future."
Speculation intensified amid reports that Max Verstappen is unhappy with Red Bull's performance, compounded by his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase signing a deal to join McLaren by 2028 at the latest.
During the British Grand Prix weekend, Oscar Piastri reaffirmed his commitment, stating he has "multiple reassurances" that the team is happy with him and is "very happy with where I am," he told Autosport.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown and team principal Andrea Stella have also attempted to quell rumors, with Brown stating he would be "very surprised" if Lando Norris or Piastri went elsewhere due to their happiness.
Verstappen is contracted with Red Bull until 2028, though reports suggest a release clause exists if he falls outside the top-two drivers in the championship, as the Dutchman continues to face mixed results this season.
