TV licences could be free again for all pensioners after thousands back new campaign
Campaigners say means testing leaves millions of older people paying the fee, while the petition’s 10,000-signature threshold now triggers an official government response.
A petition calling for all pensioners to receive state-funded Licence coverage has surpassed 10,000 signatures, mandating an official response from the Government as Campaigners push for universal access regardless of income.
Under current rules, free Licence coverage is restricted to households receiving Pension Credit—a means-tested benefit many eligible pensioners never claim. Campaigners say this leaves millions facing severe financial pressure.
Petition creator Michael Thompson said many pensioners are "living on the breadline," noting that for those living alone, television provides a vital "lifeline to the outside world" despite soaring costs.
Critics say it is wrong that pensioners on modest incomes must cover Licence fees while broadcasters receive "huge salaries." Supporters argue restoring universal access would ease pressure on vulnerable Older people.
If the petition reaches 100,000 signatures before July 21, 2026, it could be considered for debate in Parliament. With more pensioners struggling financially, pressure on ministers is only likely to intensify.
